The times, they are a changing, and the Toyota Corolla has been there through it all. In every form, it has embodied some element of appropriateness for the era, much like how certain artists and songs become representative of the cutting-edge sound of the musical trends they helped shape.
Almost all of these songs are immediately recognizable. If not by name, by sound. Toyota takes us on a time warp ride, exploring the sounds of the decades. From the soulful 60s with Edwin Starr’s “Twenty Five Miles” to the funkadelic 70s with Chic’s “Le Freak!” From the future-forward synth drenched 80s with Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit,” to the grungey 90s with Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage.”
The new millennium is where Toyota leaps forward with an artist still on the cusp of hitting it big and representing the sound of our era. For what could be considered THE 2014 Toyota Corolla commercial song, they chose the bass music sound of “Orion” by Shy Kidx. This Italian DJ blends dubsteppy bass wobbles and wailing synth with an attitude that caught the attention of punk label Epitaph, who brought him on board. Like it or not, this sound does encapsulate the current state of musical innovation, and it’s nice to see genre boundaries breaking and a brand take a positive stance on the future direction of generational innovation.
