There I was watching the most depressing loss of the entire Broncos football season when this new commercial for Cadillac came on. I froze. I had to know what this song was. After rewinding the DVR a few times to pick out some lyrics to search I was unsuccessful.
Then the Packers game came on and I saw the commercial a second time (which is also where reader Mike Crumley heard it). I cranked it up. That funkiness. That falsetto. Ugh. I searched some more without luck.
Oh, but then it was Sunday and time for The Golden Globes, sponsored in part by Cadillac. Suddenly I was seeing this commercial at every break and I knew I had to write about it. It was my duty. Luckily, Cadillac had finally decided to put the ad on YouTube, so my search came to a satisfying, yet unsatisfying end. I discovered the track was by a Los Angeles rock outfit called Victory and the song was called “Play It.” But I also found out that the song has not yet been released and won’t be available for download until the band puts out its new release, Victory Is Music, in the spring. Dang!
Anyway, in the commercial itself, a group of guys take their Cadillac XTS out on the town. They play night baseball, pick up an old dude and his dog on the side of the road and go to a diner and dance. Just a typical night out I guess. It’s all about the return of life lived large. It’s goofy and it’s kind of nice to see Cadillac being a little lighthearted with its ad.
You can download the band’s first album through iTunes and like Victory on Facebook to keep track of when you can actually get this funky groove in your library, and once the song is released I will update this post.
Despite my cranking of this commercial every time it comes on, I can’t quite pin down all the lyrics. Listen for yourself below.
