The opening tune of this Chevy commercial is Patty Griffin’s “Heavenly Day”. We get to see the heartwarming story of a girl and her robot dog. As they drive through the country, the girl ignores her peaceful surroundings for videos of shopping models with Chevys, skateboardy Chevys in the hood, old Hollywood-style actors with Chevys, and a sci-fi adventure. She pauses the video to see a family of deer. One of them approaches the car, and she pets its curious little head.
When I was a kid, my grandparents took my siblings and I on a road trip to Mount Rushmore. On the way, we dropped into Custer State Park. The moment we drove through the gates, we were greeted by a herd of friendly donkeys.
They were not even the slightest bit shy. They immediately swarmed the car, silently demanding the nibbles they knew we would supply.
And supply we did. We must have given them a full box of crackers. They were so tame, they ate directly from our tiny hands. On an expired instant camera somewhere, I’ve got photos of my brother balancing a cracker between his lips, while an eager donkey reaches for it.
There’s something magical about interacting with nature that way. But, if I’m being honest, I was zoning out to Big Willie Style – Will Smith all the way to the park. Just like the little girl in the video, it took me a while to see how lovely it was outside.
[UPDATE] It turns out, my colleague Matt has already written about this commercial. Check out his post, it’s excellent.
