Chevy Malibu commercial

Do you & your friends sing together in the car? I never do this. Am I missing out? Should I get new friends?

Sweet! Another 80s song coming in through our request form. (First it was a Duran Duran remix and then a Rolling Stones commercial.) I really dig this. In this Chevy Malibu commercial a group of friends (or is it two couples?) who appear to be 30-somethings are rocking out to Spandau Ballet while driving somewhere together. The driver turns the music down in order to brag about how cool his car is, to everyone’s dismay. A dude sitting in the backseat who sort of looks like he could be a relative of Tom Hanks actually calls out the name of the musical artist. Cool! Too bad “Spandau Ballet” is so odd-sounding that people who haven’t heard it before probably won’t catch it. In trying to research the meaning of the 1970s-formed British band’s name, I found urban legends saying it is related to Nazi Germany concentration camps. Say it ain’t so, Spandau Ballet! Say it ain’t so.

In the name of full disclosure, I will admit that I had never heard the original of this song before now. I was familiar with it, however, because P.M. Dawn sampled it in their sweet, early 90s hip-hop tune Set Adrift On Memory Bliss. So good.

The lyrics that play in the commercial are:

This is the sound…of my soul
This is the sound…
