Outro - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

The trailer for the upcoming film, Cloud Atlas, features “Outro” by M83, a French electronica band backed by frontman Anthony Gonzalez. “Outro” closes M83′s sixth studio album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which, supported by a gold single of its infectious, synth-driven “Midnight City”, had inspired gushing reviews (for instance, NME’s Jamie Crossan compares the album to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1943 novella The Little Prince) and ultimately ranked at the top of many critics’ “Best of” lists in 2011.

Here, “Outro” is a perfect fit for the kinetic, goose-bump raising tease of Cloud Atlas, a film adaptation of David Mitchell’s mind-blowing 2004 novel of the same name, from the writers and directors of Run Lola Run and The Matrix, starring Halle Berry and Hollywood newcomer, Tom Hanks. (He’s probably so nervous).

Actually, it’s South Korean actress, Doona Bae, who makes her Hollywood debut by playing the clone Sonmi~451 and steals each scene of post-apocalyptic Nea So Copros (as seen in this still-frame). Saying anything further about who Sonmi~451 is, what the heck Nea So Copros is, or why Tom’s dressed like he’s auditioning for a 70s-version of General Hospital in one scene, and then being chased by angry islanders the next, will completely ruin everything for you.

So, if you haven’t read David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, you only have a few weeks until October 26th to be able to leave the theater, pick up your friends’ dropped-jaws, and explain what exactly they just saw. Most likely, though, given what we see here, you’ll be leaving the theater like the rest of us: slowly and quietly, shaken from a long dream you never wanted to end.

The thought of anyone comparing and album to The Little Prince is a bold statement and an outrage, and probably the best reason ever for me to pay more attention to M83.
