You know how you’ve always wanted to eat Special K at the movies? Well now you can. (Unless you already were, in which case: carry on.) The purveyor of all things healthy-ish has somehow crossbred popcorn with potato chips to come up with a new snack which I’m willing to bet tastes just like a flattened rice cake covered in artificial butter powder. Dig in, folks.

Side note: I’m confused. They’re a popcorn chip hybrid but they’re kept in the cracker aisle? Special K, you’re so unpredictable. I love that about you.

The song in this commercial is called I Love Your Ooh, and though you probably don’t know her name, this is likely not the first time you’ve rocked out to one of Salme Dahlstrom’s tracks. In 2009 the Walstreet Journal crowned her the “Music Licensing Queen” after songs of hers showed up in 8 commercials, 14 television shows and 13 films. Dahlstrom has mastered the art of the upbeat pop song and turned commercial work into a great marketing tool. Take a minute to check out her stuff and see what else you recognize.

This Buick Encore commercial not only features music by They Might Be Giants, but it also features dinosaurs who are giants! My favorite kind of dinosaur is a triceratop. The first play I was ever in was at my town’s library and I was cast as the lead (a triceratop) as I was the only kid tiny enough to fit the costume. My job was to walk around and ask all the other characters if they were my mom. Who would have thought that years later I would be spending my life as an actor/improviser? Not me. I thought I was going to be a veterinarian. What did I learn? That dreams change, and that’s OK.

The song featured in this ad is The Guitar by the aforementioned They Might Be Giants. To me, telling you who They Might Be Giants are is like telling you that you missed out on something very important during your teenage and young adult years. They are an alternative band formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. They have released 16 studio albums, have released certified gold children’s albums and won two Grammy Awards. I am making an assumption that you’ve heard their songs Birdhouse in your soul and Istanbul (Not Constantinople). Their music has appeared in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, The Oblongs (was I the only person who watched and loved this show?), Resident Life, Higglytown Heroes and Dexter’s Laboratory. In 2006 they also contributed 14 original songs for the Dunkin’ Donuts ad campaign, “America Runs on Dunkin.” If you are wondering what the band is up to today, well in March they released their sixteenth studio album, Nanobots. So yeah, they are indeed giants.

We hear a lot about the Woman who lived in the shoe. Remember how she had so many children she didn’t know what to do? Well apparently part of the reason she’s so frazzled is her husband is clearly not helping. In this new DirecTV commercial the man in the shoe just wants to watch some basketball in the bathroom. And hey, who can blame him? But seriously, they’re your kids too. Maybe put the iPad down and try teaching a few of them some carpentry or something? Your wife is exhausted and you guys could obviously use an addition.

The song in the ad is brought to you by Denver based group DeVotchKa (also known as your author’s favorite band ever). The gypsy tinged rock band that got its start performing at burlesque shows found a wider audience when they scored the box office hit Little Miss Sunshine and the song in this spot is from that very soundtrack. The Winner Is is actually a reworked instrumental version of How it Ends, so if you’re into lyrics, that is the track for you. Or you can download this sweepingly gorgeous live version recorded last year during a concert with the Denver Symphony Orchestra. It was literally the best thing I’ve ever flown 1,000 miles for.

Ermahgod Julia (yes this is a horribly inappropriate joke to associate with a kids movie), I am so excited for Monster University! Have you seen the Monster University trailer? No? Well watch it now and get excited with me. I mean come on, first off… Pixar… please hire me. You are geniuses and I love everything you do. Except for Cars. I didn’t love Cars, but other people loved Cars so I guess it’s just me… everything else, I love. There is not a second off. I guess maybe there is. Mike and Sully back again? Dreams do come true ‘yall. I think Monsters Inc. might have been one of the first Pixar movies where I realized they are smarter than everyone else. I am sorry if I just called you stupid, but you guys, they are just so good. So yes, this movie is a prequal for Monsters Inc. and it comes out this summer and you should come to the theater with me to watch.

Wolfmother are an Australian rock band formed in 2000. We all know that the only bad thing that has come out of Australia is the movie Australia, so far, everything else that I know of has been aces. Their first album was released in 2005 and won the J Award and the ARIA award for Best Breakthrough Album and Best Rock Album. The song Woman, which can be heard in the Monster University trailer, won Wolfmother a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007. The band is currently touring with Aerosmith and (fun fact) recorded their 2005 album Cherokee in the same place that Aerosmith records. I was trying to think of a joke about how Aerosmith must be crying since they met Wolfmother… but that joke just doesn’t seem any good. If you have a good one, please share in the comments!

The second recognizable song you are hearing in the Monster University trailer is the 1983 hit True by the British bandSpandau Ballet. I can definitely say that I have heard this song in countless 80s movies but I had no clue that was the bands name. I would like to blame the band themselves for changing their name from “The Cut” to “The Makers” to “Spandau Ballet” (a band member saw it written on the wall of a nightclub bathroom), but I didn’t know any of this until I just read it on Wikipedia. Apparently on April 29th they are releasing a 30th anniversary edition of the song which includes a bonus CD and DVD. I bet all you Spandau Ballet fans out there are peeing in your pants right now. Spandau Ballet is a British band formed in the late 1970s.

I have found my brand new favorite commercial and it happens for be for Oreo’s. Obviously the song in this adorably addictive Oreo commercial is custom made, but you can actually download it over at SoundCloud. Why do I love this commercial so much? Well the song is just darling and by Owl City (more on them next) and I am a complete sucker for  good animation. I caught this spot while watching Mad Men the other night and it was such a delightful reprieve from the darkness and sadness that happens in that show. I am dying to know who did this animation so if you figure it out, let me know in the comments!

Now, on to Owl City. Owl City is an electronica group (group isn’t the right word as it’s just one man, Adam Young, although he does tour with others) started in 2007 in Minnesota. He found a following through social networking sites like Myspace and gained popularity with his album Ocean Eyes in 2009. Young got his start in music while he was working loading Coca-Cola trucks and suffering from insomnia. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so good at sleeping. Maybe I could be a successful artist as well. Apparently Owl City are pretty tight with animation as not only does his music appear in this Oreo commercial, but he has songs in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (Owls… Owl City… yeah yeah yeah), Wreck-It Ralph (one of my favorites) and The Croods.

“It was weird. Good weird. She tasted like Doritos.”

Relatable and endearing. An awkward first kiss. Forgettable if it weren’t for that tasty, tasty powder flavoring. That’s Taco Bell’s premise in this promo spot for their Cool Ranch Doritos Locos tacos, an inevitable followup after the popularity of their taco’s Nacho Cheese evolution. Let’s just be grateful they didn’t throw in some full on French action to make things more awkward than even the Go Daddy Super Bowl commercial.

This Doritos Locos commercial song is a smart selection, fitting both the story and the objective. “All Eyes on You” by St. Lucia accurately captures both the boy’s dilemma as he sits, watching his date in the passenger seat, and the real world state of attention on their new taco crossover offering. While all eyes stare hungrily at this latest fast food experience, the groovy bass and feel good synth-pop that St. Lucia delivers is sure to catch some ears.

This sweet iPhone 5 commercial song shows a bunch of people in various activities taking pictures with their iPhone 5′s and presumably uploading them somewhere. Their tag is that more people take pictures with iPhones than any other camera. I have no clue where they did their research or got their numbers from, but until that proof is provided to me, I suppose I will accept it. As a recent iPhone owner I can certainly say that the quality of pictures you can take with an iPhone is far superior to my old Blackberry. Granted my overall feelings are that these are phones and not cameras, it certainly is convenient to be able to have this little guy in my pocket and be able to take good quality pictures.

Regardless of any of this, the gorgeous piano in the song is by one Mr. Rob Simonsen. This film composer currently lives in LA and learned to play piano early in life due to his musical family. He has provided musical arrangements on Surf’s Up, Moneyball, Life of Pi, (500) Days of Summer, Dollhouse, The Way,Way Back and The Spectacular Now.  His work has appeared in a slew of other commercials as well. What I am saying, is this man is good and you should be buying his music.

While I am not able to find a download of this particular song, I will give you Pondicherry – Life of Pi (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) from Life of Pi, because it’s just great.

Get ready Destructicons because today’s Bacardi commercial is all about smashing shit. Fruit to be specific. Bacardi’s new Pineapple Fusion rum combines the flavors of pineapple and coconut, so what better way to illustrate this than by smashing them together in a produce explosion? Remember that episode of Mad Men where Peggy pitches Heinz the idea of a midair Bean ballet? Just like that, but with more chaos. Awesome.

The Bacardi commercial uses the song Frisky by rapper Tinie Tempah. Originally from London, Tinie (born Patrick, his parents didn’t name him Tinie) released his debut album Disc-overy in 2010 at the impressive age of 22. The second single off of that album, Frisky, entered the UK charts at number 2, and Disc-overy quickly went double platinum. The track is smooth and confident, just like you’ll be feeling after a few sugary rum drinks.

“Spoonful” is one of the most covered songs of forever.  It’s up there with “Summertime” and “Yesterday” and that one song about rainbows and happy little bluebirds and the soft yearning of wistful hearts.  I have no data to back this up, just a brain-feeling, like the kind you get after watching this Haagen Dazs commercial on fast forward and then it’s over and you know you want something in your mouth, but you can’t decide between ice cream or Bradley Cooper.

This version of “Spoonful” is by Belgian singer-songwriter Selah Sue, and as I said above, it ain’t on iTunes.  Luckily, all of the other versions are on there.  First snatched up by the gravely, growlin’ Howlin’ Wolf and written by Willie Dixon, “Spoonful” was recorded by Etta James, Cream, Canned Heat, Koko Taylor, Ten Years After, George Thorogood and about 172 others, plus some bro that calls himself Johnny Diesel.  The ridiculous thing about that sentence, dear readers, is that none of these people are Bradley Cooper.

IS THERE ANYTHING SEXIER THAN THE SMIRKING CROOKED EYES OF BCOOPS BECAUSE NO THERE ISN’T.

In general, I support everything catawumpus.  This does not mean a herd of bouncy, giggly cats (I’m a dog person) (not like, a furry or something (not that there’s anything wrong with that), you wanna dress up like Snoopy and lick some dude’s Woodstock, you go, Glen Coco) despite whatever images your brain instagrams onto your mindscreen.  Go on, google it, but don’t forget to come back here even though you probably already forgot what this article is about, which is, of course: lady boners. Obv.

Bradley Cooper’s face, you see, is sliiiiiiightly catawumpus.  Everything is cocked a wee bit to the left, so he’s got this puckish loveable mutt thing going on (seriously, I’m totally not a furry) with accidental handsomeness.  Some guys are just handsome, and sometimes it looks like it’s not on purpose, and that is the BEST KIND OF HANDSOME. Especially when their eyes are a little askew.  Guys like that are not passed over for ice cream.  What kind of an illiterate megaslug picks ice cream over Bradley F#@*!ng Cooper?  I had no idea Haagen Dazs was so into epic fantasy.  Then she eats it with her finger?  Slut.

I say download the Koko Taylor version.

Our wonderful reader Melina requested we track down the song used in the new promo for a show called Motive. Motive is a Canadian import that originally aired in February, so it was a little harder to find the American preview than I would have thought. When I did track it down though, my initial thought was that those are the horns from Sam & Dave‘s Hold On, I’m Coming. Not the case. That’s actually “Gotta Work” by R&B songstress Amerie.

First, let’s talk about the show. An all-business blonde female police detective speaks in a lot of cliches. Occasionally busting out quips like “Nothing says Friday night like a homicide.” The show boasts its executive producers and says it’s a clever twist on a whodunit because the viewer gets to know the killer and the victims before the police do. Isn’t that what Law & Order: Criminal Intent is all about? Isn’t that just called dramatic irony? Hasn’t that been around since Shakespeare?  As you might be able to tell, I’m not too excited about this show, which airs on ABC starting May 23.

Meanwhile the song is kind of a ripoff of its own, adding just enough notes to the horn line to not get sued. Amerie has a strong voice, and based on the video for this 2007 track, she’s got some pretty good dance moves too.It’s a nice motivational song, but overall it sounds like it’s been done before.

Then again, maybe I’m being a little too harsh. If you’re in the mood for yet another major network cop show that isn’t CSI or NCIS or Law & Order related, you could check this one out. I could be wrong and it could be awesome.
