What Song Is In That Commercial is going international, ladies and gents. This request is for a Google Chrome ad airing in the UK. After a little bit of extra searching I was able to dig this one up. Thanks for the challenge, anonymous reader.
The 60-second spot tells the story of Julie, a mom who misses her old satchel, and with some encouragement from her daughter decides to make them herself. Over the course of the commercial, Julie’s satchels go from DIY project to the next big thing in the fashion world. In the spirit of other Chrome ads, this one manages to tell a pretty cool story while still showing off all the Google products. Closing with the line “Julie Deane, Mum & trendsetter,” it’s uplifting bit of advertising that makes you want to get up and make something of your life. And the music certainly helps.
Alex Winston’s “Velvet Elvis” has the kind of dynamics that match the commercial perfectly. Starting off softly, then growing to a crescendo with lots of drums and a big chorus, before settling down again near the end. The upbeat music adds a lot to the story of Julie Deane, but the lyrics are a little strange. Maybe with all that’s going on in the commercial, you’re not really supposed to focus on the music too closely. The lyrics are below, decide for yourself.
Ma said, I ain’t right
Clutching on you all night
But you’re my, you’re my guy, Elvis
When I feel your velvet, I can’t help it
Hold your frame, whisper your name
When I feel your velvet, I can’t help it
And you don’t breathe, so you can’t leave
And they’re comin’
They’re comin’
They’re comin’
Whoaa no
