Reader Silvia requested we cover Google Chrome’s latest commercial through our request form. “Jess Time” is a glimpse into the relationship between a father and his daughter and their interactions using Google Chrome via video chat and instant messaging as she navigates her first year of college. The song is “Broken Chair” by Chris and Thomas, an Americana/Folk group currently located in Los Angeles.
The description on the YouTube video provided by Google Chrome is “A college freshman and her dad stay close while she’s away”. Jess misses her home, her mother (who has died), her own room. She questions if she made the right decision. She’s frustrated and doesn’t feel like she belongs there and her dad reassures her with “if she (her mother) could do it, so can you”. It is a touching and heartwarming commercial. I know, I know, I sound all sorts of cheesy but it’s true. If you don’t believe me, check out the comments posted on the YouTube page.
“Broken Chair” plays in the background and the music is deceptively simple – an acoustic guitar and a steady bass drum beat. However, it’s the haunting lyrics which make this song moving and complex. It’s a song about life and accepting the good, the bad and moving on, regardless of what may happen. In the last verse of the song, Chris and Thomas sing: “And as, your life, goes on./You deal with, what comes along./Some friends, they come, and stay./Some leave and, go their way.” This perfectly mirrors the storyline of the commercial and in the end we know Jess can handle anything that comes her way.
