Apparently H&M doesn’t believe in wasting time in their commercials. Lean and mean is the name of the game. With this ad, they may have just sold you some jeans in 20 seconds flat. An anonymous reader requested this one and I’m so glad they did. Leave some info next time so I can give props.
This brief spot promoting H&M’s Fall 2010 denim features the beautiful Daria Werbowy (in triplicate no less) modeling some skinny jeans while the equally beautiful, and probably more vocally talented, Erykah Badu tackles the blues standard “Mannish Boy,” originally by the legendary Muddy Waters.
Everybody knows that harmonica riff, but Badu’s sultry voice gives the song a new dimension that’s a especially nice when advertising women’s clothes. But I also appreciate the fact that Badu didn’t take any liberties with the lyrics.
I can appreciate a short commercial. I dig when a brand just gets to the point. But shoot — you get Erykah Badu to cover “Mannish Boy” and we only get to hear the first few lines? It’s almost upsetting. Worse yet, we can’t purchase her version.
H&M has shown that you don’t need a lot to make a solid commercial. The minimalist approach works well here, it’s just too bad we can’t hear Erykah’s take on the whole track.
Everything, everything, everything’s gonna be alright this mornin’
Ooh yeah
Now when I was a young boy at the age of 5
My mother said I was gonna be the greatest man alive
