The new Kia Sorento commercial song brings us all the way back to the fabulous ’50s. 1957 in fact. Which is when Bobby Day and the Satellites released “Beep Beep Beep.” The song has got that early rock and roll sound with Day singing about searchin’ for his baby for miles around. The backing vocals repeat “beep beep beep” throughout, there is excellent saxophone, and Day’s vocals are so classic they will take you right back to the days of sock hops and soda fountains.

Day is perhaps best known for singing the song “Rockin’ Robin,” which may be why some call him a one-hit wonder, as none of his other tracks reached the peak of popularity that “Rockin’ Robin” did. But perhaps in 2013, with the help of this new Kia commercial, Bobby Day will reach a second peak of popularity with “Beep Beep Beep.” We can make it happen.

The commercial itself shows a family searching high and low for a parking space, but the only one available is cramped by the car next to it and the wall on the other side. Using the Sorento’s folding mirrors and power lift gate the father is able to squeeze the new crossover into the spot despite the tight fit. It’s funny, but personally I’d be a little nervous about the car next to me scratching up my brand new car when they pull out.

The tagline says the Kia has an answer for everything, which leads me to believe that maybe there will be a whole series of ads with Kia providing answers for other tricky situations. We can only hope that those other ads feature golden oldies too.

The song may be old, but it’s a nice breath of fresh air to hear that vintage sound amid so many dubstep and techno songs that seem to be flooding the airwaves of late. Check out the ad below and see for yourself.

Lyrics:
Lookin’ for you baby, searchin’ all the world around (beep beep beep)
Lookin’ for you baby, searchin’ all the world around (beep beep beep)
I jumped on Sputnik, didn’t know I was spaceward bound (beep beep beep)
I’m flyin’ so fast, just rippin’ through night and day (beep beep beep)

No. The new one with the kids singing and the girls imaginary paper mache. Can’t find it anywhere! It’s great.
