Everyone always freaks out about the Super Bowl commercials (including us), but one week later the Grammys busted out a few new ads too. One such ad was this one for Windows 8. The commercial featured the wonderful Americana artist Langhorne Slim and the title track from his 2012 release The Way We Move.
I love Mr. Slim, and The Way We Move was on my personal top 10 list of Best Albums of 2012. Folky, stompy Americana seems to be having a moment right now (see: The Lumineers and recent Album of the Year Grammy winners Mumford & Sons), but it seems like Langhorne Slim has sort of gotten lost in the shuffle. While “The Way We Move” and a few other tracks on the album are reckless rock anthems, they sit side by side with some really emotional and sincere balladry that I think deserves a little bit more attention.
Sorry for putting on my music snob hat there for a minute. Let’s get back to the commercial. The 30-second spot mostly shows point-of-view shots of people using Windows 8 on tablets in all kinds of situations: Outside, playing a 4-way game of Fruit Ninja, at a picnic, whatever. The commercial really shows off how you can disconnect the laptop screen from the keyboard and use it as a tablet on the go for “all kinds of fun”
Langhorne Slim’s track works with all the movement in the ad, and maybe this exposure will help him, and his band the Law, move closer to the spotlight they deserve.
There we are, extending into shooting stars
In our houses, in our cars
You didn’t know it, now you do
This is the way (This is the way)
We move. Hey!
