I’m only 25 years old, but some things just make me feel like a grumpy old man. I remember when Pluto was a planet. I remember when Facebook was exclusive to college students. I remember commercials for point-and-shoot cameras.
This commercial for the Nokia Lumia 928 is basically a camera commercial, but it’s also a smartphone commercial. That makes me feel old. Smartphones have become so smart recently, that instead of having a commercial for all the features of a phone, the Nokia Lumia focuses entirely on this phone’s ability to take photos in low light. The ad shows a bunch of stuff happening in the dark. There’s a guy dancing, some sweet neon scooters, and a guy just pouring a gallon of milk on himself for some unexplained reason. Obviously all the coolest stuff happens when it’s dark, so your camera on your phone should be able to capture all those moments. Personally I think camera phones have gone too far. But that’s a story for another site.
The music comes courtesy of Mercury-Prize-winning UK darlings Alt-J. The bass-heavy “Fitzpleasure” from the band’s breakout debut An Awesome Wave rumbles through the ad and melds with some of the striking visuals to create a really attention-grabbing commercial. Alt-J has had what seems like a meteoric rise to fame and with this ad seem poised to burst out of underground circles and make even bigger waves.
Regardless of how you feel about the rise and dominance of camera phones, the commercial for the Nokia Lumia 928 is pretty cool. Check it out below.
