So this is a new movie, but I really feel like I’m reporting on old news. Here we have the Romeo and Juliet trailer, featuring the song “Skin” by Zola Jesus. This film comes out this year, but it’s been done so many times…I’m curious to see how director Carlo Carlei is going to make this newest iteration different from all of the others.
I hate Romeo and Juliet. I am an English major, so I’ve had to read it a good half-dozen times since high school, and honestly, it has lost its allure. All I can think, every time I read it (I avoid film adaptations), is “Bad freaking choices, terrible advice, and a heap of dead kids.” And then I go sit grumpily by myself to fume at Shakespeare for awhile, until I have to read it again. I took a course in Shakespearian tragedies last semester, and the only thing that got me through our reading of R&J was this video. Best line: “You took a roofie from a priest. Look at your life, look at your choices.”
But this is a music blog, after all. And I think the dark notes of “Skin” fit this trailer. At first listen, Zola Jesus reminded me a lot of Florence and the Machine. She’s got that deep soulful alto, and I really dig it.
I also dig that they cast Edward Westin (Chuck from Gossip Girl) as Tybalt. If the trailer is any indication, he’s going to absolutely kill in that role. I’m not as familiar with the rest of the cast, except for Paul Giamotti, who plays Friar Lawrence, aforementioned roofie-distributor. As lovely as this trailer looks, I’m not sure if I’ll go see Romeo and Juliet. What about you?
Safety net, don’t hold me now
Skin of all
And in the sickness,
You have faith
And in the thickness
You find me
