The song in the 2012 Chevy Sonic commercial “Night Swimming” is Iron & Wine‘s “Each Coming Night” from the 2004 album Our Endless Numbered Days. This short spot features some young people taking the car out to a lake for a night swim, almost locking their keys in their car until one of them remembers the phone app mentioned in the ad, which apparently allows you to unlock your car with your phone. Good thing he didn’t accidentally go swimming with his phone in his pocket! The lyrics by themselves are a bit sad and nostalgic — “Will you say when I’m gone away/My lover came to me and we’d lay/In rooms unfamiliar but until now” — but paired with the fun commercial, and the narration “from close call to best night ever,” it all gives a sense of creating fond and lasting memories.
