Remember a couple of years ago when Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead” was freakin’ everywhere? It kept popping up in all kinds of commercials, from the Palm Pixi to Little Big Planet 2. Well, it looks like the electro-pop group is at it again, but this time with “Take A Walk” off of the band’s 2012 release Gossamer. Something about those insistent, driving beats and catchy synth lines just makes you want to buy stuff. Whether it’s Doritos tacos or, in the case of this “First Look” ad, $300 headphones.
Our reader Chandler requested we cover this commercial, and it’s a nice change of pace from our normal fare, because this one is almost three minutes long. In the world of advertising that’s like a mini movie. Thanks for the heads up Chandler.
This commercial starts off with a bunch of people discussing why they listen to music, how music makes them feel, and what they feel like when they dance among other things. Set against the backdrop of skateboarding, sweaty dance clubs and studios —it’s kind of a cool way to grab the viewer’s attention. Plus Passion Pit’s thumping away in the background throughout.
Then we move into everyone’s favorite V-neck-wearing Brit, Simon Cowell, discussing how he came to design the headphones with Sony and why these particular headphones are the best possible thing in the entire universe, obviously.
From there (two minutes and 40 seconds is a long time), we get some feedback from musicians like Shiny Toy Guns and Alberta Cross as well as some man-on-the-street style reviews.
By the end of the whole thing, I certainly felt like I needed a pair. If nothing else, Dr. Dre and his Beats might have a little competition.
