This inspirational Target college acceptance commercial features the song “Soldier” by Ingrid Michaelson. The commercial shows kids’ real reactions to finding out they’ve been accepted to college and touts “Every kid deserves this moment. Great schools can get them there. Target is on track to give $1 billion to K-12 education by 2015.” Thanks for giving back, Target! ”Soldier” is the first track from Michaelson’s 2009 album Everybody; and despite the hopeful tone of the commercial, the featured lyrics actually are meant to express doubt in the context of the song:
But then you opened up a door, you opened up a door
Now I start to believe in something else
But how do I know if I’ll make it through?
But how do I know? where’s the proof in you?
But once this clip is paired with the inspirational message of the commercial, it makes the uncertainty much more hopeful, because even though going to college is a new and unknown experience for these kids, it is very exciting!
