If you’re like me, you hadn’t heard this one before, so thanks, Target! And thank you to Catibeth and the many others who mentioned this in our request form. This groovy “Falling for Fall” commercial song is appropriately called “Fallin’” by Connie Francis. It was written by Neil Sedaka and released in 1958. The whole spot is a play on the word “fall” and its different meanings–the autumn/fall season and the new products and clothing Target will be selling, falling for a person (or in this case products), and why not, people literally falling from the sky. It apparently begins in the summer as the people floating down are wearing less and there are beach items around them, and gradually changes to fall as they gain more layers and the sky (and that one woman’s hair) becomes more of an amber color. It ends as they all gently land on a bed of fallen leaves at a dinner table (maybe for thanksgiving?).
The lyrics we hear in the commercial are:
I got to feelin’ I’m a fallin’
Like a star up in the blue
Like I was fallin’ off Niagra
In a paddle boat canoe
I got to feelin’ I’m a fallin’
And it’s all because of you
Target Falling for Fall
