Cheers to our reader Donald for requesting we take a look at the new trailer for The Great Gatsby, the upcoming adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. There are three songs in here so I’ll break ‘em down in the order which they appear.
First we are introduced to Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby while he’s driving around in his fancy car talking to Tobey Maguire. Since there is no better driving music than Jay-Z and Kanye, we hear that throbbing introduction to “No Church In The Wild” that you may recognize from those Dodge Dart ads. But that’s just the beginning.
Once we get into the meat of the trailer things shift a bit. We get to hear those pounding, big drums and huge vocals that can only be courtesy of Florence Welch and her machine. The chorus to “Bedroom Hymns” from Florence + The Machine’s 2011 album Ceremonials is a perfect fit for this point in the trailer where we see Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle.
Song: Happy Together – The Stepfather (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Then comes the biggest surprise in the whole trailer. About a minute into it, when the credits start to roll, we are treated to a weirdly haunting cover of The Turtles’ happy-go-lucky ’60s classic “Happy Together” by Filter. Remember Filter? They had a couple of hits in the ’90s with “Hey Man, Nice Shot/a>” and the mellow “Take a Picture.” Surprisingly, they’re still a band.
Filter’s version of “Happy Together” first appeared on the soundtrack to the horror movie The Stepfather, remade in 2009. The cover starts off kind of brooding before it gets scream-y. It’s kind of like Nine Inch Nails 101, but the song works well in the trailer. Things start getting intense near the end, so the screaming adds to the intensity. It’s a smart pick, but it’s weird to hear such a happy song turned on its head.
The Great Gatsby was first scheduled to be released on Christmas, but has since been pushed back to May 2013. Check out the trailer below and mark those calendars.
