The History Channel is venturing into scripted television with their new show called Vikings. It seems like lately a lot of channels you wouldn’t expect to have scripted dramas are taking that turn. Look at A&E’s Bates Motel Sparticus on Starz. The History Channel is keeping things historical by telling the no doubt bloody and violent tale of real-life historical figure Ragnar Lothbrak as he climbs the ladder of the viking world and eventually becomes king of his viking…brood, or tribe, or whatever you call a bunch of vikings.
The show also stars the very awesome Gabriel Byrne and looks like it’s going to try to throw down against HBO’s Game of Thrones and the aforementioned Sparticus for your undivided attention, but seeing as how The History Channel is not a premium cable network, maybe it could shake things up a bit.
An anonymous reader asked us what song was in the Vikings promo and we can tell them that that is AWOLNATION and their song “Sail.” Pretty clever to put a song called “Sail” in a promo about vikings, and a show that will no doubt feature some sweet sailing and viking ships.
AWOLNATION, and especially “Sail,” has been popping up everywhere lately. Something about that heavy bass beat and lead singer Aaron Bruno’s throaty shout just makes you wanna get pumped. It’s like dubstep without actually being dubstep. Coincidentally, Bruno’s former band is Under The Influence of Giants, a funky throwback group that also featured Jamin Wilcox (now J-MAN) on the skins.
Anyway, The History Channel looks to be putting a good foot forward with this new show. We’ll see how they fair with drama. Personally I’m surprised their first drama series does not actually have to do with Nazis or Hitler or something to do with World War II, but hey, it looks like The History Channel is full of surprises.
Vikings premieres March 3. Check out the trailer below. Will you be tuning in?
