Volkswagen commercial bulldog

Song:  Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog
Artist:  Johnny Cash
Download:
Dirty Old Egg-SUcking Dog - The Essential Johnny Cash (1955-1983)

Don’t you just hate it when your dog eats your car keys?  Okay, that’s never happened to me.  But if it did, I would wish I had keyless access to my car as evidenced in this humorous 2013 Volkswagen Jetta bulldog commercial.  It begins with this hapless gentleman running late for work, looking for his keys when he realizes his pet bulldog must have eaten them.  Lucky for him, all he needs to do is hold the dog up to the car (glad it wasn’t a bigger dog!) to unlock the doors, and then press a button to start the ignition.  Then, as the responsible pet owner he is, he drives directly to the animal hospital to make sure his dog is all right (shame on you for thinking he was still headed to work!).  But he wasn’t in too much of a rush to keep him from using the dog again to lock the doors and roll up the windows.  The Johnny Cash song–with its slow, lazy feel and very appropriate lyrics, is a perfect comedic underscore for the dog.  The lyrics heard in the commercial are:

Well he’s not very handsome to look at
Oh he’s shaggy and looks like a hog
And he’s always killin’ my chickens
That dirty old egg-suckin’ dog.

The chicken part is tactfully drowned out by the voiceover, though I think they could have made a new version about car keys.  Too obvious?  Okay, I guess the original lyrics are still pretty good.

Really??? What is he doing with the ugly-bad dog?? Putting him down?? Really super BAD marketing!!! Dislike Johnny Cash & now dislike VW. My bulldog puppy has the greatest personality, & is is absolutely adorable to boot. Iam soooo angry with you guys!!!

    • Jessica Thompson

We are independent writers. We did not make the commercial.

    • Natalie

Um…he’s bringing it to the vet to get the keys removed? Are you really that dense?

      • Judith Pretto

Yes apparently she is thick as a brick. I laughed so hard when I saw it I almost fell off my chair. And it is just a commercial, why can’t she see the humor and just enjoy it like we did? The guy is an actor and so is the dog, now. With the stressful way things are nowadays it’s nice to have something soooo funny happen! She needs to relax.

      • Chris

Apparently so.. Commercial is hilarious. Why the heck would someone think he was bring the dog to the hospital to put him down. I take it this girl doesn’t visit the doctor very often for fear of being “put down”

    • Julie

Michele, if your bulldog puppy swallowed a set of car keys, wouldn’t you take him (or her) to the vet? I hope you wouldn’t leave the keys in the the poor puppy. That could kill him!

    • mike Rollo

dude seriously? it’s a commercial man ,come on..I have a Rott and if i get offended eveytime someone says they’re killers i’d be pissed all the time.Lighten up brother

    • CJ

He’s not putting the dog down he’s taking it to the vet to get the keys removed

    • Mike

Really? You think he’s putting the dog down? Never occurred that the dog didn’t actually have magical power that could open the car and start it but rather that the dog ate the keys?

    • Cathy

      Michele,
The bulldog has swallowed the keys…since your bulldog is still a puppy I can understand your ignorance. However my bulldog is over 5 and we have already had to perform surgery to remove the various toys/stuff he has eaten. The commercial is excellent marketing & Jonhhy Cash is a legend for a reason.

    • mlcerrone@gmail.com

You an idiot that commercial is awesome

    • YEARIGHT

Please, some people are mistaking fantasy (TV crap) for reality. Really? Turn off the damn TV, and get a ‘real-life’. GOD HELP YA.

  • Michele Laurice

    Disappointed in your marketing staff!!!

    • Jessica Thompson

We have nothing to do with the marketers who made the commercial. They will not see your comment. You’ll have to contact them directly.

      • david breecher

i have an english bulldog look almost identical to the one in the ad…
i being an average person would infer the man taking the dog to the animal hospital is the correct thing to do given the fact if left in the dog could suffer a painful death if the keys were not removed.
i laughed my a** off when i saw this commercial…
advertising was awesome & commercial was great…
another reason continued education could help so many…

        • CocoPuff

I have two bulldogs…found the commercial to be very cute. Bulldogs chew anything. People ease up, it’s a fricken commercial.

          It’s funny!

          • laurra

I LOVED this commecial!! I have 2 bulldogs and they are adorable BUT they have eaten the strangest things(like an arizona ice tea can one time, and a plastic kroger grocery bag another time-which by the way was not a fun thing to help him “remove”) and this is FUNNY!!

  • Valerie

I LOVE this commercial! Lighten up, Michele…he takes the dog to the vet to get the key out of him, not put him down. You’re being overly sensitive, if you ask me. This commercial makes me laugh every time. And yes…I’m a dog lover!

    • Deb

I thought he was taking the dog to day care, but now that I know it swallowed the key, that’s HILLARIOUS! Sooooo cute. I love the look on the dog’s face when he’s sitting in the back seat. LOL Too cute, good for the VW advertising geniuses.

      • Deb S

Looks just like my baby girl Molly. Same expression. Cute.

    • Janet

You go Valerie! This commercial is a hoot! And you are right he it going to the vet to get the key out (grosssss!!) – not to put him down.

  • ELB

Really disappointed with people with NO SENSE OF HUMOR! Awesome marketing! Very well done, simple, to the point, makes me want to take a look at the VW, and a bulldog!

  • Tortiequeen

Gosh, it never entered my mind that he was going to put the darling bulldog down. Only heartless jerks do that. The dog is perfect, obviously well taken care of. Perhaps Michele had a childhood bulldog trauma, cut her some slack. I love the choice of music too. No one as real as Johnny Cash, so much saidbin just 4 lines. Congratulations on a wonderful commercial, i just wish it were longer

  • jesse

why would anyone assume he was taking the dog to have it put down? That would never even have crossed my mind. And what vet would do that? Talk about over reacting .

    • Duder

I know a vet who would put a dog down for anything, cause they horrible people. Betty Baugh’s Animal Clinic in Richmond, VA, USA. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET(s) there.

  • Miss Chevious

Thanks for this website. I’d been wondering about the song. The commercial is hilarious!

  • CowGirlLove

I love it! I was a kid when the song came out, so the commercial got my attention, but the whole thing is so Cute!!

  • Melaina

LOVE The commercial!! Being a bulldog owner myself I can see how this could happen…they are into everything!! I have watched this over and over. Great commercial Great way to start my day with a giggle or two.

  • Tracey

Its a commercial! The dog owner obviously isn’t putting the dog down! We have other things in life to worry about! Instead we mock a hilarious commercial! It’s not like the dog really ate it! I love it. Coming from a 3 (shelter dogs only!) dog family!

  • Niki

Anyone with a dog that has ate their stuff will love this

  • Betsy

LOVE that ad! If I hear the song coming on, I dash into the room to see it. Not really effective since it too many views to note the care because the dog is just so darn cute.

  • roger

Love it. Great song. Love Cash. Its funny. 5 dog family some rescued some not.

  • nicolette

MICHELE ~ don’t feel bad ~ I thought the SAME thing ~ that he was having the cute puppy dog “put to sleep”. ~ I stumbled upon this comment log while looking for a name and/or email address to the company to voice my complaint & disgust to but NOW i understand it ~ although I think the “writers” of this commercial did a piss-poor job of making that clear

  • JeannieCO

That’s just about the funniest commercial I’ve seen and I have two bulldogs. Some just don’t have a sense of humor, I think it’s hilarious!

  • Pennie Urban

I Laughed so hard my face hurt!!!! The expression on the dog is priceless! Never changes no matter how the guy swings him around. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!

  • http://lawrencesand.com KPedigo

Such an awesome commercial…Bully’s are the greatest and look at his expression! Thank you VW…keep it up with the cool animal commercials!

  • http://www.facebook.com/TimmyThePamperedPug Timmy

This really made us laugh. Great dog choice and song choice!!!!!
We read the comment about someone not liking it and being offended….but we didn’t see it that way. Timmy is a pug….we always say he is so ugly he is cute….and we mean that in a fin affectionate way. Great mearketing!!! :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/TimmyThePamperedPug Timmy

      ops, marketing! sorry!

  • jamie

It’s a great commercial. Always makes me laugh. No matter how bad the mood or day, this little snippet makes it all OK . Awesome advertising.

  • david breecher

i have an english bulldog look almost identical to the one in the ad…

i laughed my a** off when i saw this commercial…
advertising was awesome & commercial was great…
if you listen to the commercial about the new keyless entry you would understand the guy holding the dog up next to the car would infer he ate the key… being a commercial it was infered and i can guarentee the key fob was probably hidden on the harness not actually given to dog to eat just for a commercial their are things like animal rights that are considered by corporations when doing ads like this one.
another reason continued education could help so many…

  • reen

the dogs eyes look like human eyes

  • Missy

Michelle, change the channel. No one is making you watch. Oh, and if you are so offended, don’t buy a Volkswagen. See how easily your problem is solved.

  • Magnus

I DVR everything and fast-forward through the commercials. This one, however, I stop, rewind, watch it about three or four times then finish fast-forwarding through the rest of the commercials. Any time a sponsor can get me to do that I consider to be a major marketing success. Some people just need to lighten up.

  • Janie

How can you believe that he is taking the dog to be put down? It doesn’t even appear that way. To me it appeared that he was doing exactly as he should and taking his poor dog to the vet to have the keys removed. I didn’t see anything to suggest otherwise.

  • Lisa chase

Disgusting! Just saw this commercial . Volkswagaon should be ashamed! Is there no conscious awareness in this company ? A few years ago there cruelty to a frog in a commercial made me vow to NEVER buy , support anything Volkswangon . The word needs to be spread. Thank all of you who have objected to this commercial . Senseless, unconscious, ignorant and really stupid marketing,

  • Diane

Brilliant marketing. Bulldogs don’t eat, they gnarl and swallow objects. You don’t need a robot vacuum sweeper in the household. They’ll scarf up anything “mouth sized” on the floor before you notice you dropped it. You gotta love em, they’re so loyal. The scene in the vet’s parking lot says it all…save the dog, the key is “toast.” Although it says a lot for German engineering , that the key is still operational from the innards of a bulldog. (Note: I can tell Michelle’s bulldog hasn’t swallowed anything yet, or she would understand the quick trip to the vet.)

  • mina

I love the harness and I’m trying to get one similar for my english bulldog…anyone have any suggestions where I could find one like that?

  • John

Michelle must work for GM and is jealous of VW – Political Marketing rhetoric BS. Nobody in their right mind would think he is putting down his dog… – get real!

  • jet

Anybody who believes he is ‘putting down his dog’ should not be allowed to drive – they simply don’t pass the intelegence part of the driving test :-)

  • Alley

This is a COMMERCIAL! and it is funny. As a bulldog owner myself, I`m not offended at all. Bulldogs are known to eat just about anything and this is to be taken on the softer and funny side of things of this breed. So much more in life to be upset about other than this commercial. Sit back, watch it and enjoy it.

  • LaurenH

I couldn’t see the humor in this advert and that’s why I ended up on this page. Every time I’ve watched the commercial, I’ve thought I saw his keys attached to the dog’s collar, so I didn’t understand why he brought the dog with him for the drive instead of just taking the keys off the collar.

Now that I read the dog swallowed the keys, it’s hilarious.

  • judy david

you couldn;t have thought of another song..hate it ,hate it hate it…..all animal lovers should NOT buy any VW auto just because of that commerical!

  • http://www.MyThirtyOne.com/SBrooks Sarah

I LOVE this commercial, it is my absolute favorite on tv!! Just like others have said we usually fast forward through commercials but always stop and watch the ones with Bulldogs in them. Our precious bulldog crossed the rainbow bridge at far to young an age. She was a dirty old egg suckin dog and she was the love of our life. We are lucky she never ate the keys with everything else she chewed up! She was the most horrible dog on the planet and yet the best one too. She took a piece of our heart that can never be replaced. I can’t wait to someday add another bully to our family. This commercial puts a smile on my face.

  • jessieb

As a fellow bulldog and boxer owner, i can say I think they have eaten almost everything not nailed down at this point. Cutest commercial ever! And anyone that owns a bulldog knows that they make that exact same face when they do something wrong or don’t want to cooperate:)

  • Thomas

My bulldog loves the commercial. We reverse live TV to play it over and over for her.
    Great Commercial!!!

  • Thomas

My bulldog loves the commercial. We reverse live TV to play it over and over for her.
    Great Commercial!!!

  • Barbara Bensl

It’s obvious this dog has done this before – he probably wants the car ride and visit to the vet!
It’s a great commercial – we love the dog and the whole premise.
