Song: Lil’ Red Riding Hood – Little Red Riding Hood – EP
Artist: Laura Gibson
Wow, Volvo, this is an intense commercial. I didn’t know you had it in you! The new spot for the Volvo S60 is a take on the classic fairy tale. Only this time we have a Volvo Red Riding Hood, and the wolf knows better than to mess with that so he lets her pass. Inside the car the driver’s cute little daughter howls. Take that, wolf.
The song in the commercial is a cover of a tune originally by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs from Portland Folk Singer Laura Gibson. (Apparently I’m on the Portland beat here at What Song) I like the gender reversal of this cover. Gibson’s folksy take undercuts some of the song’s darker imagery (am I the only one who saw Striking Distance? Yeah, actually I think I am), but it doesn’t lose its edge. The song may be written from the perspective of the wolf, but in this commercial it is pretty clear that Red Riding Hood is the bad-ass.
Hey there li’l red riding hood
You sure are looking good
You’re everything a big bad wolf could want
