Song: Lekar Hum Diwana Dil (From “Yaadon Ki Baaraat”) – Yaadon Ki Baaraat / Hum Kisise Kum Naheen
Artist: R. D. Burman
First, full disclosure: I love Warby Parker and I am wearing glasses from Warby Parker right now. So when Jack requested we hunt down the song used in the company’s very first (and very weird) television commercial I jumped at the opportunity, but I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into.
First let me tell you about Warby Parker. The Internet company offers a wide variety of hip glasses for the low low price of $95 (even prescriptions). When you buy a pair, they give a pair of glasses to someone in need. They also have this very awesome Home Try-on option that allows you to pick up to five pairs of glasses to have mailed to you so you can try them on and decide which frames look best on you in the comfort of your own home. Prescription sunglasses run a little higher than $95, but what are you gonna do?
Instead of merely highlighting Warby Parker’s low prices and helpful service, the company’s ad just goes strange with it. In the animated commercial, two eyeballs on unicycles go in search of some glasses. It’s a strange style, but it definitely grabs your attention. The song in the background most of all.
Now, this was a tough search. I knew it sounded vintage, and definitely Bollywood, or maybe some kind of Indian psych rock. After searching for a little Indian psych rock, despite coming across some pretty cool bands from the ’70s, I was no closer to finding this track. And if you’ve ever tried to search out a song by just typing in Bollywood music into Google, you know that’s just your basic needle in a haystack situation.
So I went to the source and emailed Warby Parker. I got a prompt response from Maddy, who had this to say, “ I just asked around the office if anyone knew of the artist, and the most detailed information I received was that the score comes courtesy of R.D. Burman, an Indian film score composer who rose to fame from the 1960s and 1970s to become equal parts cult figure and pop icon.”
Awesome. I had a name. But Maddy was right. This dude was prolific. I mean, just look at his discography. However I was one step closer. Eventually, I found it. It was a 1973 track called “Lekar Hum Diwana Dil” from the movie Yaadon Ki Baaraat. It features some sweet guitar, horns, sweet call and response vocals and it’s pretty darn funky. Who cares if you can’t understand the lyrics?
I had to confirm this was the correct song so I went to YouTube and pulled up a video. It’s so amazing to me that I included it at the bottom of this post along with the commercial itself. It was an exhaustive search, but in the end, totally worth it.
